Singapore Mahjong Fei Rules

Learn how Fei tiles work in this Singapore Mahjong game, including the allowed counts, winning-hand substitution, discards, and replacement draws.

How many Fei tiles are used?

Fei is optional. The table setting allows 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, or 20 Fei tiles. The count is always a multiple of four.

What Fei can do

  • Fei remains in the player hand and can substitute while the engine checks a legal concealed winning shape: sequences, Pungs, Kongs, or eyes.
  • Fei can help complete the winning shape according to the active Fei rules, but it is not exposed as a normal tile.
  • Fei is not a Flower, Season, Animal, or ordinary tile and does not score as a bonus tile.

What Fei cannot do

  • Fei cannot be discarded.
  • Fei cannot be used to claim another player's discard for Chi, Pung, or Kong.
  • A Fei drawn during a normal turn does not trigger a flower or animal replacement draw.
  • Fei tiles are counted in multiples of four when the table is configured.

Fei and special wins

A Fei-completed hand can still qualify for a special hand when the required shape and restrictions are satisfied. Special hands use their own tai totals and are governed by Caps Max Tai for Special rather than ordinary pattern stacking.
